The Dances of Universal Peace are a moving meditation practice involving simple dance movements and music shared in a circle. A dance leader, supported by musicians, teaches participants a chant and movements. Soon, the circle is singing and moving together, deepening into the meditation. The dances offer a joyous and multi-cultural way to touch the spiritual essence within, share heartfelt connection with others and experience deep inner peace.

No experience or partner is required – the dances are easy to learn and are taught to the whole group each time. Bring non-marking indoor shoes and a water bottle. By donation.

Locally Produced Green-Building Documentary Comes To Nelson, Kaslo & Revelstoke - 'GREENING THE CUBE - 100 MILE HOUSING'
and will be screened on Tuesday 03rd November 7:00PM (doors open 6:30pm) at The Langham Theatre in Kaslo. 

Tickets are $8 for Kaslo Arts Council Members, and $10 for non-members.
The film run-time is 83 minutes with a Q&A session to follow.

Aaron Cadwaladr is a West Coast musician, residing in Vancouver, BC. His debut album “Wade Through The Dark” is due to be released in the fall of 2009. Aaron has played with multiple bands around Vancouver, including Juno nominated band The Kerplunks. As a solo artist, Aaron Cadwaladr is an up and comer on the Vancouver music scene and has been working tirelessly to put out a sound that can be appreciated by all who care to listen.

Susu Robin, a new musician to Nelson will open up on jazz piano and vocals followed by a local favorite, Carol Street who has performed with the C.B.C Trio and Pat Henman. Partner dancing :
-having fun while walking in rhythm to a beat, and in sync with a partner.

There are only 4 directions one can walk; therefore, any step you make is a dance step.

One can "find" many different rhythms in a tune...the beat does not matter...it's keeping the beat which matters.

Moving 'in sync' with a partner is a skill which can be taught/learned.

You will be taught:
-lead and follow
-sync-ing with a partner
-finding a rhythm
-Swing variations

This is not 'arthur murray' style. This is not about style.
It’s about having fun dancing.
It’s about "leaders" learning how to give their partners a
terrific dance experience, and "followers" acquiring the skills to follow any dance leader.

$25 for 3 classes.

Come reflect on traditions of the past. After an interative tour of the Permanent Museum Exhibit, children will engage in the time-honoured process of candle making, and be asked to reflect on candles as sources of warmth, light, and inspiration for inner contemplation. Then a renowned local artist will use natural fibres and ancient tools to teach children to spin wool into yarn. Introduce your children to age-old means on winter survival which will affirm their connection to history and to the land. Workshop fees and $10 for members and $15 for non-members.

You are invited to an evening of Zikr led by Sheikha Darvesha Victoria MacDonald of Silver City, New Mexico.

Zikr is a Sufi practice of divine remembrance that employs the breath, unified movement, rhythm, sound, music, and singing of sacred phrases. It can be described as a heart-centered moving meditation. This practice is open to all – no previous experience necessary. Every Zikr is a new experience. “Come, come, whoever you are!”

The Hobos are of another time. A time when pleasure usurped profession; when live music provided the soundtrack for excess; this period they bring to life on stages across Canada. With a stage show that harkens back to the days of the travelling salesman, The Hobos are the cure-all elixir for those requiring entertainment. Their brand of music is authentic and complex, mixing equal parts of the carnival, farm, tavern and circus. Two acoustic guitars, a banjo, mandolin, doghouse bass and a fiddle create the unique backdrop over which the 6 vocalists paint malevolent yet harmonious works of art. Their music drives and swings while they stomp - the crowd smiles and joins in.

We're in for a treat as the Grass Mountain Hobos who are in town for a show at Finley's tonight will give us a taste of why they won entertainer of the year at the P.E.I Music Awards and bluegrass album of the year at the East Coast Music Awards. They will play from noon to one so come early as seating is very limited.
They will be followed by local favorites,the White Lightning Blues Band. Rounding out this session will be the Pine Years who recently played with James Lamb at the Velvet Underground, with their first show at Nelson's only pure acoustic venue.

The best little dance band to hit the streets of Nelson, BC, Heavy Shtetl has been entertaining tourists and locals alike with their mix of Klezmer, minor swing, and traditional jazz. The band plays old standards from New Orleans, Jewish wedding music from Europe, and a smattering of French, Russian, and Balkan tunes. They recently released their first cd, Buskin’ on Baker. Heavy Shtetl features jazz veteran, Dmitro Woychuk on sax and clarinet, Catherine McGrath on accordion, mandolin, and high-hat, Anneke Rosch on trombone and helicon, and John Deeley on upright bass. Whether you’re eight or eighty, you’ll enjoy their upbeat, highly danceable repertoire.

Racing takes place 10 am every Sunday (until snow comes)on formed outdoor race tracks, (North Shore of Nelson, we have 2 tracks. Electric cars only for now. This will be an introduction to the Feldenkrais Method. Used by our Canadian Men's Alpine Ski Team and loved by local Nelsonites, this mini-workshop will provide a first hand experience of why and how these exercises are so beneficial.

Participants can expect to leave this workshop with a few basic tools to help with their turning, lifting and walking. End results will be a freer back, hips, neck and shoulder.

Classes will be fun, soothing and easy-to-follow.

Flying Colours: Flags that Shaped our Nation

The Canadian flag is a familiar icon and largely taken for granted, yet barely a generation ago the redesign of the Canadian Flag was a hotly contested issue, at times resulting in booing crowds and even a few death threats! This exhibit will feature an impressive array of flags of national significance, as well as some of the people, stories and drama that have been associated with them.

In 2001, Wil wrote his first album titled "Both Hands". Independently, it sold over 6000 copies off stage in its first year. In 2004 the album was re-released via EMI Music giving Wil the opportunity to tour with artists such as Colin James, Matthew Good, Joel Plaskett Emergency and Xavier Rudd among others as well earning him 4 nominations at the 2005 WCMA’s including producer and “Entertainer of the Year”. Wil collaborated with some of Canada’s most respected writers and musicians including 54-40's Neil Osborne, Jason Collett and Ron Sexsmith and released his second full length CD called By December in 2007.

Wil is currently recording his 3rd album and is set to be released in the new year.
