Today’s art world seems largely to reflect the disparateness, chaos, and increasingly empty values which many deplore in society and in the world today. As a much needed antidote to the “angst” ridden art prevalent in the cities, the vwf of the ARTS is seeking artists whose work reflects something of the beauty of life, & of the wilderness around us.

All work will be considered, but preference will be given to artists living in and around the Kootenays, and to work that is well executed and which depicts something of the Kootenay's wilderness values.

The West Kootenay EcoSociety, in partnership with the Wilderness Committee, will be hosting an event entitled ‘Rivers at Risk’ in response to the groundswell of opposition to poorly-planned, environmentally-destructive, power projects.

Please join us for speakers, discussion and a short film about Glacier-Howser and other endangered rivers in the province.

It will feature Rex Wyler, cofounder of Greenpeace International, Gwen Barlee of the Wilderness Committee, and Raelynn Gibson of the West Kootenay EcoSociety.

The event will be entry by donation, but noone will be turned away!

Kirtan is a spiritual participatory musical experience and is one of the world's oldest sacred music traditions. Using ancient Sanskrit mantras, the Kirtan calls upon sacred energies which serve to quiet the mind, remove obstacles, and bring us back to the center of our being.

The Mishras are world class Indian Classical Musicians and are currently touring BC before returning home to India.

Rosalyn Grady presents: Strategies for Coping with difficult times: Teachings from the Indigenous Grandmothers.

The elders tell us that we are in a time of global change and the changes needed to sustain life on our planet will begin in our individual hearts. This evening presentation will feature teachings from the Yupic Grandmothers who are prophets, healers and visionaries. This evening will focus on sharing more in depth some of the stories and practices that will assist us to ride the waves of change with grace.
Rosalyn Grady has been studying with, and assisting the Council of Grandmothers for the past four years. She is an educator and counsellor and has her doctorate degree in Spiritual Studies.

Many people wanting to enjoy the benefits of a healthy diet, by eating according to their blood type, can feel stymied by the practical side of cooking with this diet, especially when other family members with different blood types have divergent dietary needs. This year the entire tour takes place along Hoover Street with three additional sites, the Brewery Building, Firehall and Cathedral of Mary Immaculate. As usual, the variety of sites on the tour illustrates a realistic cross-section of homes built by people from all walks of life. This made-in-BC feature documentary film about a regular couple and their quest to answer the question "is it possible to live completely waste free?". It is currently being toured across Canada by bicycle. Come meet the filmmakers!

Synopsis: Partners Jen and Grant go head to head in a competition to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least landfill garbage in an entire year. Their light-hearted competition is set against an examination of the problem waste in our “throw-away society”. Featuring interviews with renowned artist, Chris Jordan and marine pollution expert, Captain Charles Moore, The Clean Bin Project presents the serious topic of waste reduction with optimism, humour, and inspiration for individual action.

In this time of accelerated changes and transformations, we are being challenged to evolve our complete beings- physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. While we are feeling the challenges and stresses of this time, we are supported in our development with wisdom and tools both new and ancient. Dowsing is one such tool that is re-emerging from our collective memory to assist us in navigating this time.

Kristy Gordon is back in Nelson for the summer and is teaching a three day Portrait Painting Workshop for a second time. Last year's class was phenomenal and this year's class will be equally as good. Since last summer, Kristy was chosen as one of the artists to paint a celebrity on the television series "Bravo's Star Portraits". Also, she took her third year of OCAD in Florence, Italy, spending the entire year painting.
The class is suitable for all levels of students. A model will be present,instruction will include painting techniques, how to mix colors, which paints to put onto your palette and tips on brushes and other supplies. This is a great opportunity to learn painting from an internationally acclaimed artist.

This daytime market offers regional farm produce and a variety of products. A majority of the food and goods sold will be regionally grown and crafted in an effort to support local sustainability. Live music is always a part of the market from 11am-2pm. Here you will find organic produce, ready to eat foods, local, hand-made and wonderfully creative Kootenay products.

There's few better ways to exercise your drawing skills than by drawing the human figure. All ages and levels of skill are welcome to attend a drop-in session with a live nude model. Bring your own supplies such as a large sketchbook and charcoal, pencils, crayons, etc. Sessions will begin with short poses progressing gradually to long poses. A $5-10 sliding fee is charged to pay the model. Same time every week.
