Tickets for the 2012 event went on sale on Friday October 21st and orders steadily continued after the first two tiers of tickets sold out on the first day.

“This is completely unprecedented,” said Social Media Director, Britz Robins. “But event tickets selling out well in advance is a trend we’ve observed gaining momentum, especially where electronic music is concerned. Many electronic-focused events across the continent are experiencing quick sell-outs, at a rate that has accelerated considerably over the past couple years. Over the past year especially, electronic music has been gaining popularity in North America, and we’re seeing that reflected in ticket sales in a big way.”

If you find yourself among those who missed out on online sales, fear not. Tickets will be available in stores on Saturday, December 3rd at Big Cranium Design in Nelson and Skyway Hardware in Salmo. For information on more BC & AB ticket store locations, visit www.shambhalamusicfestival.com.

Tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis and are limited to 3 tickets per customer. Based on strong ticket sales thus far, a same-day sell out is expected in the larger cities. Shambhala 2012 is 19+, ID will be required to purchase tickets.

A Shambhala representative will be available at all retail locations on the first day of sales.

There will be a food hamper at each ticket store location on December 3rd. Bring non-perishable food items to be entered into a draw for a Shambhala 2012 ticket. Food donations will be given to a local food bank in each city for the December holiday season. Donations collected locally will be going to the Nelson Food Cupboard, and the Salmo Food bank.

October 3rd, 2011
$100/ $80 early registration by Sept 15th.

Our youth are in sore need of adults who model wellness. The arts and in particular the expressive arts are one way to make that bridge. This is done through careful and sensitive mentoring utilizing low skill, high sensitivity ways of art-making that tells a story and brings creative potential to life.

This workshop is for members of the community from all backgrounds who are interested in how to help youth channel their energy into something positive and nurturing. Simple and effective writing, movement, drawing, music and theatre techniques will be taught as well as some simple and effective counseling skills that accompany the work.

Markus Alexander has conducted hundreds of workshops in this area of difficulty and challenge for the past 25 plus years most recently in Kingston, Jamaica where their at-risk youths, particularly young men , are in great need of timely, effective help.

The arts give us a context for exploring the space between: between our inner lives and our conscious awareness and between ourselves and society. This workshop will explore how what is most meaningful can have its rightful place in our lives both within and without. The arts expose our values and ideals in a creative and playful way. This work is intended as both personal exploration as well as professional development. All that is required is an interest in the healing effects of the creative force within us and its impact on the world around us. Several art forms will be utilized including drawing, writing, music and dance/theatre. This is a low skill, high sensitivity training. Bring your willingness to discover where humor and seriousness meet in the realm of Deep Play.

Bio:
Markus Alexander is a leader in the field of contemplatively oriented expressive arts. After founding and directing a school in New York for twenty years, he immigrated to Canada where he runs the World Arts Organization (worldartsorg.net). He is currently senior faculty at the European Graduate School in Switzerland and has recently taught in Jamaica and Portugal. He will be in Malta at the next International Expressive Arts Symposium drawing upon his experience as a performance artist and musician co-facilitating community art with expressive arts pioneer, Paolo Knill.

The Oxygen Art Centre is pleased to present a full line up of courses for its Continuing Arts Education programming this fall. Courses in performance, film, writing and visual arts are available, taught by established Kootenay artists. Please join us!

The illustrious Bessie Wapp will be teaching her ever popular “Blues Singing I”. Life is the only experience required to growl, groan, wail and moan! Each week students will learn a blues song, and explore the rich swamp of the human voice in a supportive environment. Plus brand new by request, “Blues Singing II”! Picking up where StB1 left off, students will stretch further into improvisation, spontaneous composition and jazz.

October brings courses in Writing and Visual Arts beginning with Brad Carr’s “Fiction Fundamentals”. This course will combine intensive writing exercises with reading and critiquing the work of others. Along the way, students will look at the work of several luminary fiction writers - searching for that image, phrase or style that will inform our own writing.

Murray Kimber will be teaching “The Essential Figure: Drawing”. The human form has long been a standard in art. This course offers a simple, logical approach to figure drawing based on 3 areas of emphasis: understanding human anatomy, seeing rather than looking, and moving beyond line to incorporate, mass, tone and form as essential elements of drawing.

Natasha Smith will be sharing her extensive knowledge of collage in her “Collage Painting” course. Learn how to create interesting surfaces using a diverse range of materials and then combine painterly techniques to create colourful textural paintings. Students will investigate colour and composition and discover how to collage, paint and photo transfer on panels, boards and alternative surfaces. This is a process-based course with experimentation at its heart.

Deb Thompson will be offering “Inside Out: Figure Painting”. In this course students will study the human figure from the inside out - exploring how the human skeleton informs the body’s outlying structure and movement. Working with the skeleton and the live models, we will explore how the human figure occupies space, contains volume and expresses itself in movement.

Cassie Beecham will be teaching “Playwriting”. This course will help students develop a half hour stage play while coming to understand plot, dialogue and characterization. Students will receive comprehensive feedback after each draft. We will also cover pitching the script to Fringe festivals across Canada.

Registration is through Kootenay School of Art ph 250-352-2821 or drop by 606 Victoria St. in Nelson. More info: www.OxygenArtCentre.org/classes.html

In the East Gallery of the Kootenay Gallery of Art in Castlegar, Claire Kujundzic of Wells, BC will be presenting an exhibition entitled Message from the Beetle. Her work is a response to the impact on our forests as a result of the pine beetle epidemic. Caught between her repulsion to the devastation of our forests by the pine beetle and her fascination with the marks and coloration of the beetles’ work, Kujundzic has rendered a version of our forests demise with care and sensitivity. Her giant canvases will fill the gallery reflecting this devastation while at the same time carrying a message of hope and serving as a tribute to the forests of British Columbia during this International Year of the Forest. As Kujundzic herself states,” the making of this work has been challenging, but it has also made me more hopeful. Doing it has forced me to confront large, complex issues, but it has also prompted me to notice our connectedness to the planet and to see the green that grows through”. This provocative exhibit will encourage the viewer to examine a subject of particular significance to this resource based region.

Building the Building - Building Community, a photographic exhibition in the West Gallery reflects and documents 40 years of building, maintaining, and initiating community activities by the volunteers of the Vallican Whole Community Centre and the Rural Alternatives Research and Training Society. The Vallican Whole is an architecturally interesting and beautiful building created by the women, men and children of the Slocan Valley and beyond. The Vallican Whole was a long time home for the Whole School (1976-2008), and has become a centre for the education and celebration of ideas and practices for producing, buying and eating local goods. This exhibition, curated by Helen Sebelius, documents through iconic and everyday photographs, taken and collected by Marcia Braundy, the construction, maintenance, community initiatives and celebratory gatherings. It also includes the recent development of the ecological sculpture park on the site. These shows will run until September 10th.

The Kootenay Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10- 5pm and is located across from the Castlegar Airport on Heritage Way. www.kootenaygallery.com

“Better is Peace.”

Time passes too quickly, precious moments are dispersed by our busy lives.

On Thursday, November 11, Remembrance Day when we commemorate the soldiers that have gone to war, I sat with others in the Capitol theatre to experience “The Armed Man.” Those two hour won’t be forgotten. Thank you for all those who spent their time to bring “A Mass for Peace” to us. How fortunate we have this kind of dedication and talent in our town. This amazing performance was unforgettable. How do we say thank you to Allison Girvan for following her dream to bring “The Armed Man” to the stage.

Part One, begins with the first reading,” The Silence” from the Manchester. Gaurdian,WW1, Nov 12, 1919. An unforgettable “And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda is sung by Andrew Caron. Soloist Don Mac Donald sings “ Christmas in the Trenches.” and takes us back to World War 1.

We cross borders, with the blogs of John Rohan a USA Army Intelligence officer read. by the remarkable and talented Brahm Taylor. All the many voices from across the ages come alive. I don’t think anyone can forget Mary Audia singing, “We’ll Meet Again,” reminiscent of Vera Linn.

Fifty singers enter the stage without notice. They are there, those who represent the single soldier thus the title “The armed Man.” They are there too to represent the generations that have gone to war. The theme of glory and shame, nostalgia have already been present but with the arrival of the silent Armed Men Ensemble the mood has changed . Why? I am not sure how or why this happened; you can say the faultless choreography. Unity and Purpose come to my mind.

The choir, Soprano, Tenor, Alto and Bass, all fifty members are present and accounted for.

Made present?

The armed man should be feared they cry out everywhere

Best to leave it now to Laurie Jarvis who comes out to sing, “I’ll be Seeing you” before intermission.

Part two

A Mass For Peace begins.

It is written by Karl Jenkins, and commissioned by the former Master of the Royal Armouries. It comes as a surprise that an army man initiates a mass for peace. How Guy Wilson found Jenkins is another story. Karl Jenkins was an almost unknown musician until the jingle he wrote become popular. Serendipity?
Then Allison chose to bring a Mass For Peace to us.

Words from the Koran, quotes from Latin mass evoke the futility and tragedy of war. Toge Sankichi, writes, “Angry Flames” of the horror of the atom bomb attack on Hiroshima. He died of leukemia in 1957. Immortal voices lament the tragedy in poetry, prose and prayer. And finally of peace, and redemption.

In an attempt to pay tribute to this remarkable evening I wish to acknowledge the vision of the two men Karl Jenkins and Guy Wilson- Master of the Royal Armouries. The latter wrote the following.

“Now The Guns Have Stopped,”

For you, my dearest friend, who should be with me now, not cold, too soon

And in your grave alone

In Part One the song, “Christmas in the Trenches” told a true story of how on Christmas Day one soldier across the German lines began to sing a Christmas Carol. He was soon joined by the allied soldiers on the other side. For that short period the guns stopped.

How to bring peace on earth? Tennyson writes,

Ring, ring, ring

Ring in a thousand years of Peace

Allison Girvan wrote in the beginning of the programme, We remember that, no matter how remote the connection to someone who lived 100 years ago or lives now 10,000 miles away, we are connected by the fragile filament of the human condition .

Thank you for all those who helped bring Allison’s — and all our dreams for peace on earth . I feel proud and awed to be in a community that can give us a performance to remember. Thank you all.

And finally in the voice of Tiny Tim, God Bless us everyone

Digital imagery artists Jo Brown and Tom Bradley admit they are bewitched by the wild places of Scotland.

Twice in recent years, for about two months each time, they’ve taken photo excursions there, and they’ve brought back thousands of pictures.

They target the areas they are most taken with—the highlands and the islands. Tom studies Scottish ordinance maps for interesting features such as an old fort, or standing stones. They hike and drive the country, stopping at random, often spending hours in a single spot, letting the natural light rework their subjects.

At home in Winlaw, Jo and Tom review their pictures through the television, and the work of sorting becomes a ritual pleasure as they recall what moved them to take that picture, and share processing views.

Jo edits and prints the images, and Tom recycles a dead white pine into frames, for a combination of matted and glass-framed pictures, and stretched-canvas pieces. It takes both of them to stretch and straighten the images reproduced on larger canvases.

Scotland is on display at Cowan’s for the month of November. It features a wide sampling of images of surreal landscapes, nature, and time worn structures of wood, stone and brick.

The artists involved Cowan’s suspended ceiling to hang images taken in a natural cave.

A silent auction for the works closes November xx at 5 p.m.. The bidding book is at Cowan’s.

Opening reception November 19th @ 6pm

Artists talk and slide presentation Thursday November 25th@ 7:30pm

Nelson Artist Shayne Brandel (formerly known from ‘Build an African kindergarten with one painting’, ‘The Silence project’, ‘Ignite the Boogeyman Lantern Parade’, ‘Falling: solo exhibit at Gallery 378’ and recent co-developer of Grid Art Gallery) announces his 2010 solo Exhibition: ‘Accretion’

Brandel has put together a collection of his past years work. ‘Accretion’ is a new series of oil paintings, sculpture, video, and installation from the studio of one of B.C.’s newest discovered talents. The first venue to showcase this body of work will be Grid Art Gallery in Nelson. The exhibition will show for the last two weeks of November.

The common thread that binds these works together is Brandels approach to his surfaces; more specifically, his process. By titling this group of work ‘Accretion’ (Growth or increase in size by gradual external addition, fusion, or inclusion) Brandel refers to the importance of his process. Many of these works are seemingly blown together by the wind, and at the same time can be surprisingly realistic in their representation of objects or moments. The installation sculptures use found objects and mediums to take the viewer even further beyond the traditional landscape. ‘Accretion’ has a sense of history, strong narrative story telling, and humor. It should not be missed.

Grid Art Gallery is located at 351-B Baker St.(lane entrance) in Nelson B.C. Canada. Gallery hours are 10:30 – 5:30 Tuesday to Saturday *or by appointment anytime*.

Call Grid Art Gallery at 1.888.446.9390 for more information. Or see http://www.shaynebrandel.com for a look through the imagery from this show or Shayne Brandels other recent work.
