Nelson’s Old-time Dance and Social Club presents a Midwinter Hoedown at 7 PM on Thursday, February 9 at the Scout Hall, 310 Cedar St.

The evening features the lively music of Kootenay Kontraband: Craig Korth (banjo and guitar), Genie Sittig (fiddle), Catherine McGrath (mandolin), and David Feldman (upright bass).

David Feldman will also be calling the dances, a mix of straightforward contras, easy to learn circle dances, and the occasional Virginia Reel.

Bring your whole family (kids to grandma), indoor shoes, and water to drink. Snacks are provided.

In its earliest days, radio had an almost magical quality, with its ability to draw voices seemingly out of thin air into small black boxes. As its name suggests, this exhibit looks at the history of radio in Nelson, with a focus on the earlier years of broadcasting when the medium was at its most popular. Selected artifacts from the Touchstones Nelson permanent collection will be featured, as well as amateur, or “ham” radio, (which continues to be a viable communication option for backcountry enthusiasts and others in our region), and a timeline of selected radio highlights from the early 20th century up to the present day.

Forest for the Trees brings together four local artists whose work explores the interplay between nature and culture. Through photography, sculpture, painting and installation, the artists reveal the tensions and connections between society and the natural world. Artists Ian Johnston, Tanya Pixie Johnson, Barbara Maye and Nadine Stefan present diverse approaches, with references to science, history, spirituality and First Nations culture. By reflecting on our relationship with the natural world, perhaps we can come to a deeper understanding of our own place within it.

The Australian music award winner, radio DJ and one man blues singer/songwriter/guitar extraordinaire from the land down under is on a Canadian tour and will be bringing his popular roots and blues sound to the Royal to support his latest album, "Hot Mama Vibes". Grunwald is a real treat, a soulful performer with a deep love of the blues...and he's coming an awfully long way...make sure you see this show!

Opening the show are Vancouver's indie rockers In Media Res. These guys are great! Their performances are renowned for their intense sound and energy on stage as well as their broken guitar strings.

An "Everest-style" ski-a-thon; individuals and teams attempt to ski/snowboard the vertical of Mt. Everest in one day at Whitewater Ski Resort. Teams can come up with names, wear costumes, and challenge their friends to add a bit more excitement.

We encourage all participants to try to raise at least $100. Thanks to the support of Whitewater Ski Resort, all participants raising $100 or more will receive 50% off a lift ticket for the day of the event.

Funds raised from the event go to the Canadian Cancer Society and support excellence in research, cancer prevention initiatives, and support programs.

Student work from each of the four studios: Clay, Fibre, Jewellery & Small Object Design and Metal will be displayed. KSA’s programs place emphasis on the skills necessary to become a successful and professional arts practitioner. Hands-on studio work combined with the study of design, drawing, history, and professional practices leads to an in-depth understanding and refined ability to apply the essential elements for success in the industry.

The Royal is very excited to have The Wooden Sky return to Nelson…and on Friday the 13th no less! These 5 gentlemen have been pushing the limits of their folk rock sound & with a new album on the way we’re eager to hear what they bring to the Royal this April.

Reoccurring images such as boats, birds and cloven hoofs assemble in painterly narratives exploring transformative themes of birth, life, death, and renewal.

In addition to paintings, the exhibition will also feature a number of sculptural pieces. Although visually and thematically complementary, they are quite different from her two dimensional work, and are further evidence of an artist whose practice continues to challenge both herself and her audience.

From Sydney, Australia we welcome the award winning rock quartet The Jezabels to the Royal stage! They're setting out on a Canadian headline tour this spring in support of their internationally acclaimed debut album Prisoner. These 4 are an energetic bunch with a hard to describe sound. Some say indie pop, some say rock and sometimes you might here shades of disco. Whatever the sound, it’s making big waves wherever they play and we’re excited to have them here at the Royal.

St. Saviour's stained glass windows are unique and collectively the best example of Church stained glass in the Kootenays and on par with those in Cathedrals in Vancouver and Victoria.

Local history researcher , Greg Scott, will highlight the people and history of the 16 memorial stained glass windows and some of the memorial plaques in the Church. This will be followed by stained glass artisans, Moss & Gavin Holland, describing the history of church stained glass itself and its restoration. A question period will follow.
