Nelson Relay for Life
Written by: Local Groups
Nelson Relay for Life will be happening June 19, 2010, from 12 noon- 12 midnight, at Lakeside Park.
Relay is more than just a fundraiser; it is a chance to get together with friends, family, coworkers, or classmates and fight back against cancer! Relay starts with a Survivor Lap- a celebration of those who have beaten or are still fighting the disease. It includes a touching Luminary Ceremony, where we line the track with candle-lit bags sporting the names of loved ones either lost or still on their cancer journey. There are activities, games, entertainment, and information provision all day to help us get geared up to fight back against this awful disease.
Relay teams are the heart and soul of the event- they raise funds, create the atmosphere on the day, and make the event FUN! Teams consist of up to 12 people who, prior to the event, run FUNdraisers in their communities- everything from fashions shows to BBQs to garage sales. On the day of Relay teams pick themes, dress up, decorate their tent sites, and do smaller fundraising activities. Being on a team is a great way to connect and get closer with your social network, as you work together for a common goal. Relay can also be a great opportunity to meet new people and make new relationships. If you do not have enough people to form a team you can join as an individual and be hooked up with a team that is looking for members. Even though Relay is not until June we are asking people to please start or join a team now. This can be done at www.cancer.ca/relay.
We are also looking for survivors to participate in the event. Please join us for the Survivors Lap to celebrate your triumph over cancer! If you are living with cancer at the moment, we still consider you a survivor- so come join us! Register online as a survivor today!
Finally we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to get involved with the planning of Relay, or just helping out on the day of the event please contact Tara at tkowalchuk@bc.cancer.ca.
Two in five Canadians will develop some form of cancer in their lifetimes, join us in our fight and help us to create a world where no Canadian will have to fear cancer. Together we can make cancer history!
